A website redesign should be a moment of genuine progress: sharper positioning, stronger messaging, better performance. For a worrying number of professional service firms, it instead becomes the moment their search visibility quietly collapses, and nobody notices until the enquiry numbers have already dropped for weeks.

This isn't inevitable. It happens because the redesign was treated purely as a design and development project, with SEO migration bolted on as an afterthought, or skipped entirely. Protecting your rankings during a rebuild requires the same level of planning as the visual design itself.

**Why redesigns so often tank rankings**

Search engines don't understand a redesigned website the way a human visitor does. They see a set of URLs, and if those URLs change, disappear, or are restructured without proper signposting, the accumulated trust and relevance your old pages had built up over months or years can simply vanish.

The most common cause of lost rankings is a straightforward one: URLs change during the rebuild, and nobody maps the old structure to the new one. A page that ranked well for "commercial property solicitor Carlisle" for three years disappears, and a new page covering the same topic launches at a different URL with zero accumulated authority. From a search engine's perspective, the old page simply vanished.

**The non-negotiable: a full URL and redirect map**

Before a single line of new code goes live, every existing URL on the current site needs to be catalogued, along with which new page (if any) replaces it.

Every old URL that has an equivalent on the new site needs a 301 redirect pointing directly to it, not to the new homepage as a blanket catch-all. Redirecting everything to the homepage is a common shortcut that causes real damage, because it tells search engines the specific, relevant content that used to exist no longer does.

For pages that genuinely have no replacement on the new site, a decision needs to be made deliberately, whether that's a considered 404, a redirect to the nearest relevant equivalent, or a case for keeping the page rather than losing it.

**Preserving on-page SEO equity**

Beyond redirects, the actual content and structure of high-performing pages needs to carry across the rebuild, not just the URL.

Title tags, meta descriptions and heading structures that were driving strong rankings shouldn't be rewritten from scratch purely for the sake of the redesign. If a page was ranking well, treat that as valuable signal, and refine rather than replace. Internal linking also needs rebuilding deliberately. A page that received strong internal link equity from being referenced across the old site needs the same support in the new structure, not a fresh start at zero.

**Technical checks before you flip the switch**

A pre-launch technical audit should confirm that the new site's XML sitemap is complete and submitted correctly, robots.txt isn't accidentally blocking search engines from crawling the live site (a surprisingly common launch-day mistake), canonical tags are pointing to the correct, final URLs, and structured data (schema markup) has been carried across or rebuilt to match the new page structure.

Testing the redirect map on a staging environment before launch, rather than discovering broken redirects after the site is already live, saves considerable ranking damage and a great deal of stress.

**The first 30 days after launch**

The weeks immediately following launch are when problems, if they exist, become visible. Monitor Google Search Console closely for crawl errors, a sudden spike in 404s, or unexpected drops in indexed pages. Compare organic traffic and keyword rankings for your priority pages against pre-launch benchmarks, and be ready to act quickly if a specific page has clearly lost visibility rather than assuming it will recover on its own.

A well-executed migration typically shows a brief, minor dip before recovering to previous levels or improving beyond them. A poorly executed one shows a steep, sustained decline that can take months to claw back, if it recovers at all.

**Redesign without the risk**

A website redesign shouldn't mean gambling with the search visibility you've spent years building. It requires the same bespoke, structured approach as the design itself.

At Light Bulb Web Design, SEO migration planning is built into every rebuild from day one, not treated as an afterthought once the new site is ready to launch. We map, redirect and monitor every project carefully, so your new website launches stronger, not weaker, than the one it replaces.
