Whilst many companies may do a single long page with all of your services on (even if the menu links look like you have multiple pages), this is very bad for search engines as they cannot show these services directly in results - they can only show the whole large page, leaving your visitors with either seemingly incorrect information when they visit, or forcing them to scroll around to find or possibly even miss the details they want.
If search engine results are important, then as a minimum recommendation, your website is going to need a similar number of pages as high ranking competitors, and/or a similar amount of content (words). Beating your competitors on page 1 with a lower amount of pages and words can be difficult, even with highly focused professional copy writing involved.
Our prices include everything you need for your website:
- Hosting on our own dedicated UK server
- An SSL certificate to ensure your website is secure and encrypted
- One domain name (.com or .co.uk)
- One email address and an agreed amount of storage
- Ongoing support to keep your website software up to date
- Automated 3-way backups (Local, Cloud and a 3rd copy on our NAS)
- Google optimised images (name, size, quality and meta data)
- Custom page load speed improvements
If all of the information we need is available quickly, then using an 8 page website as an example, we would expect to have the initial live draft to you for review within 2-3 weeks. The draft will contain the home page in full, the main menu structure and contact page - all sub-pages will be left empty until we have approved the design and style of the website based on your feedback.
Once we have implemented any changes at your request, we will then complete the sub-pages, which we would usually expect to have done within a further 1-2 weeks.
We would give a general suggestion that a website of this size would take 4-6 weeks from start to finish.
If you are using the up-front SEO audit service, this stage in itself normally takes approximately 4 weeks depending on the nature of your business. That time includes creating the website copy (page text) and the time needed for you to check, provide feedback, and have changes made based on your comments.
Because this aspect needs to be completed before we can start on the website design, we would normally suggest that an 8 page website, with up-front SEO, would take 6-8 weeks to complete.
We prefer to give a conservative estimate of timescales and deliver early than give an overly ambitious one and not be able to complete the work in time or deliver a rushed result.
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. SEO is the method of building your website in a way that is optimised to deliver the best possible results when people search for your type of business or service, both locally and nationally.
It covers both on-site and off-site optimisation: On-site is anything related to your website itself. Page content and words, images, meta data and much more. Off-site is anywhere that your business and website is mentioned or listed - search engines use both your website and your other Internet presence to decide whether your website page is the best one to show to any given individual searching.
Yes, as soon as a website is complete, we create a sitemap file which details each page on your website, and then we submit this to Google Webmaster Tools and ask Google to scan your page for both the mobile and desktop views.
However, depending on the name of your brand, and the content within the pages, whether you are found on page one is dependent on many factors. Whilst we do our absolute best to optimise each and every website for the client's advised search terms and keywords, only additional search engine optimisation both before and after your website is finished can provide a significantly higher likelihood of your website hitting page one in a timeframe linked to your area of business.
In a highly competitive field, it can take a number of months to tweak both the website content as well as off-site optimisation where your business is listed and described on website directories such as Yell and on social media platforms. This extra work is not included in our standard pricing, and is priced depending on your requirements.
As standard we provide advice on the best way to write your page content and words, and optimise the meta data throughout the website to target our agreed search terms and keywords, as well as sticking to best practice image naming conventions and quality levels.
We also include a range of other optimisations to target page load times, both on mobile and desktop, which we prefer to keep a little secret - they're nothing unusual, but many of our competitors miss these and more when it comes to this type of thing - we're more than happy to show you though!
SSL stands for Secure Socket Layer. It means that any communication between your website and a visitor is encrypted and therefore cannot easily be intercepted by hackers.
Whilst it may seem insignificant, even sending a message to you by a small contact form contains personal information such as email addresses and maybe phone numbers or more, so keeping these safe from prying eyes is critical.
When running a website where visitors can buy things or login and provide even more personal information, having a permanent and forced SSL/HTTPS website is essential - even Google is now using the SSL status of your website security as a ranking factor so having one is something not to be ignored. The Chrome browser also now flags non-SSL websites as INSECURE - not the type of message you want your potential customers to be seeing!
Absolutely - all of our websites are based on a very popular CMS platform, and we can include an easy to use drag and drop page builder interface which makes it quick and straight forward to edit both page text, images and the layout.
We limit your access to the editing area of the website so you don't need to worry about breaking anything, in the absolute worst case we can just restore the last backup and put it all back together again very quickly.
Yes, absolutely. Our design tools let us check and control the way your website looks and appears across a range of devices, to include desktop, tablet and mobile phone layouts.
If something looks great on desktop not quite so good on mobile, we can hide or alter that element to make sure that whatever device is being used, the visitor gets the optimal experience.
Instead of what many website designers do, having just a single layout that responds across different screen sizes, we can go a step further and tweak specific display settings of design features to give an entirely different layout than the standard 'responsive' website may deliver. This does not mean we create three websites, one for desktop, one for tablet and a third for mobile - it means that we can control the display of each page and section based upon the device being used to view it.
The prices we provide include 12 months of hosting and ongoing support, making sure your website software and any extensions used are updated regularly. We maintain your backups, email account and provide support to yourselves in using any of the website features such as blogs, online shopping solutions and much more.
Once the initial 12 months are up, we continue to offer this same support service at a reduced cost to that paid in the first year. Without the regular updates to the website software, you are leaving yourself at risk of lowered security (since many updates address discovered security issues) and without our support to keep your website backed up.
Where search engines roll out new ranking requirements and security features, such as SSL certificates, we ensure that all of our websites are accounted for. We were and still are the first web design company in Carlisle to have gone through our entire back-catalogue of client websites (where they are hosted by ourselves) and apply, then force SSL to each and every one without any additional charges.

We need some basic things like your logo, your business name and contact details, and ideally some good photographs and then finally the words and content that you want to have on each website page.

In the late 90's, I was creating websites for myself and also a few related to my work at the time, as an IT Technician supporting 18 schools in Northumberland. My first public website went live in 1997, and was a travesty of black backgrounds, lots of red text and a spinning Vauxhall Nova which took hours to create.
In the first year of my IT Technician job, I was asked to put a few websites together for schools and projects, and it was around 1999 when I launched by first company which I called Bright Ideas Software & Design. Whilst it never traded, the website did include features which I still have on the website you are viewing at the moment - a blog and portfolio!
As use of the Internet picked up in schools, it became a legal requirement for schools to have a website, and this is where I picked up the beginnings of the skills I have now, using content management systems to allow easy access for schools to update their own websites, whilst making it easy for me to manage and maintain all of them on a regular basis.
Move forward to 2013 and our first commercial website was launched, for www.gardenstransformed.com. Dougie, the owner, found his enquiry level and workload increase so dramatically, that he was really keen to have us consider taking on more clients as he was so impressed by our work.
